Black Folks & Mushrooms

Black folkx & Shrooms. Need I say more?? I recently spent some time with the good folks over at Morning Glory Homestead on St. Helena Island documenting their mushroom event. I learned so much about Dr. George Washington Carver’s stories, accomplishments and his contributions in the mycology world as well as his role & research in identifying/discovering numerous fungi species. I learned that Dr. Carver was vital in the discovery of many fungal diseases that were affecting farmers & their crops at that time. Forager, Alex Curtis, educated us on foraging & identifying different types of mushrooms. Alex conjured up a magical meal of charred mushroom melody over a bed of butternut squash risotto made with carolina gold rice. Guests of the event had the opportunity to learn about the healing power of mushrooms, how they can be consumed & prepared, and even how to safely forage their own in the wild. Locally grown mushrooms were also provided by Grower & Forager Will “Bubba” Green.
